PetroSun Independence Bowl/Willis-Knighton Community Service
Scholarship Recipients Named

Shreveport, La. – The two recipients of the inaugural PetroSun Independence Bowl/Willis-Knighton Community Service Scholarship were announced on Thursday, as Victoria Protho and David Windler were identified as the 2006 recipients.

Prothro, a senior at C.E. Byrd High School, is the Caddo Parish public school representative while Windler, a senior at Parkway high school, is the representative for Bossier Parish. Both students will be recognized at the annual Minuteman Luncheon on Wednesday, Dec. 27 at 11:45 a.m. at the Shreveport Convention Center.

Windler ranks first in his class with a perfect 4.0 grade point average out of a class of 219 students. As the Valedictorian of Parkway’s 2007 senior class, Windler was also the recipient of the Principal’s Leadership Award and was a member of the National Honor Roll. He was recognized as a national Merit Scholar Commended Student and was named the Novice Debate Team Member of the Year.

Windler is a member of National BETA Club, Mu Alpha Theta Club, and represented Parkway at the Northwest Louisiana Scholastic Rally. He has been recognized as a member of “Who’s Who Among High School Students” and has been a homecoming escort. He was chosen as a freshman to represent Parkway at Camp Anytown Leadership Camp. Windler was also one of an elite few of the AF JROTC students to be a member of “Kittyhawk.” He is a Board of Regents Scholar and a Taylor Audubon and Taylor New Orleans Museum Scholar. Windler is a member of the Future Business Leaders of America organization, Astra Club, French Club, Ring Staff, and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He plans to attend Baylor University in Waco, Texas in the fall of 2007.

Windler’s numerous community service activities include aiding in Hurricane Katrina Disaster Relief by volunteering at a Disaster Relief Relay Center, Walk for Education, and participation in several food drives at Thanksgiving and Christmas. He has also been very active in programs associated with Breast cancer research, has participated in Walk for Education, and has served as a Sunday School teacher and Debate tutor. Windler, chosen by his peers as “Most Likely to Succeed,” will receive the “Preston Crownover Award” at graduation, which is the highest academic award given to Parkway students.Prothro, who serves as student council president, ranks in the top 30 in her class of 393. She has been a member of either the “A” or “A/B” Honor Roll each year at Byrd, and has received a multitude of awards and nominations throughout the past four years. Prothro also served on student council as a freshman and was student council treasurer as a junior. She has served on the student advisory committee each year and this year serves as the City of Shreveport Youth Council’s Chairman/President.

Prothro is active in several different organizations such as Z-Club, National Honor Society, Beta Club, and Key Club. She also serves as the statistician for the Byrd baseball team, has given countless hours of her time toward community service projects such as the Red River Revel, Habitat for Humanity, Goodwill Clothing Drive, and also aided those affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita last summer at Hirsch Coliseum.

This year Prothro received the “Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizen Award” and was a nominee for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Student of the Year. She is a United States Senate Youth Program School representative and placed second in Shreveport-Bossier Community Renewal’s “We Care” Essay contest in 2006. Prothro serves as president of the Northwest Louisiana Food Bank’s Youth Board and will be featured in Careers and Colleges Magazine’s January, 2007 issue as one of the “Great Teens Doing Great Things.” Prothro plans to attend Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge in the fall of 2007.
